Under the patronage of the Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Newgiza University marked a major milestone in advancing Egypt’s healthcare and medical education sectors with the official inauguration of its new state-of-the-art university hospital. The event was attended by Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid, former Minister of Health and Population and President of Newgiza University; Eng. Ibrahim Mahlab, former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Newgiza University; Dr. Ahmed Nazif, former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Advisory Council of Newgiza University; Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and member of the Board of Trustees; Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population; Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of the Supreme Council of University Hospitals; Eng. Adel El-Naggar, Governor of Giza; Dr. Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Health and Prevention Affairs; a number of university presidents, former ministers of health, and leaders of Newgiza University and its Faculty of Medicine.

Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister headed to the main hall to begin the inauguration program of Newgiza University Hospital. The event started with a speech by Eng. Ibrahim Mahlab, former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Newgiza University, in which he pointed out that the university was established with a clear vision based on quality, excellence, and adherence to international standards, while preserving national identity and serving the community.

This was followed by the screening of a documentary film about the establishment of the university’s teaching hospital, highlighting its advanced capabilities, available medical equipment, medical and service facilities, as well as the medical, administrative, and technical staff working at the hospital.

After that, Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid, former Minister of Health and Population and President of Newgiza University, reviewed the stages of establishing Newgiza University. He noted that the university was founded following Presidential Decree No. 93 of 2010 to establish a private Egyptian university in academic partnership with Johns Hopkins University in the United States, which at that time was ranked 13th globally.

Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid added that negotiations to establish the university had begun in 2009, and the American side stipulated the establishment of a university hospital before admitting students to the Faculty of Medicine, with an intake of 100 students annually. Subsequently, an American engineering firm was nominated to prepare the architectural drawings and designs for the university hospital.

He further explained that in 2013, the feasibility study was updated with the assistance of an engineering consultancy, which recommended that the hospital should have 225 beds, including 150 economic-service beds and 75 teaching beds. He noted that construction of the university began in 2014 with significant contributions from Eng. Ibrahim Mahlab, that the first building was received in December 2015, and that the first partnership agreements with a number of foreign universities were signed in January 2016. Student enrollment then began, and regular study commenced in the same year.

Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid then addressed the issue of university hospitals, noting that consultations were held with the Prime Minister on making use of part of the Ministry of Health hospitals and private university hospitals instead of constructing entirely new ones. At the same time, a 60-bed hospital—New Giza Community Service Hospital in Sayeda Nafeesa—was obtained and fully upgraded by the university administration, with the participation of Newgiza University students in training, education, and patient examinations. The hospital provides all its services free of charge.

He explained that subsequently, the Newgiza Health Park was allocated and its master plan was completed. The park covers an area of approximately 27 feddans as part of the integrated New Giza project at kilometer 22 of the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road. The Health Park includes the Newgiza University Hospital with a capacity of 138 beds. The hospital was allocated land of approximately 6.5 feddans, in addition to parking areas accommodating around 400 cars.

The total built-up area is about 22,230 square meters distributed over five levels: the lower basement, ground floor, first floor, second floor, and roof. He added that in 2021, work began on constructing the new teaching university hospital. The lower ground floor has an area of 5,852 square meters and includes core services, 17 outpatient clinics, a dialysis unit with 8 dialysis chairs, a lithotripsy and urodynamics department, a medical records room, a waste management department, storage facilities, a staff dining hall, laundry, main pharmacy, central sterilization department, as well as maintenance and engineering departments and administrative offices.

He also noted that the first floor, with an area of 4,980 square meters, includes 60 beds, a laboratory department, an IVF department, delivery departments, a cesarean section department with two operating rooms, and a neonatal intensive care unit with a total capacity of 10 incubators.

The second floor, with an area of 4,932 square meters, includes 35 inpatient beds, a surgical operations department with 7 operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization department, an intensive care unit, a critical care unit, and a surgical intensive care unit, bringing the total ICU bed capacity to 33 beds.

Following the presentation by Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid, Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, delivered a speech highlighting the system of medical faculties in Egypt and their university hospitals, and the tangible expansion and effective contribution they have made in supporting the national healthcare system in recent years. In this context, he noted that the number of university hospitals currently stands at 145, and with the inauguration of this new hospital today, the total rises to 146 university hospitals nationwide.

Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, then delivered a speech expressing that the availability of such a hospital comes within the Ministry of Health and Population’s efforts to develop the healthcare system across all governorates of Egypt, emphasizing the expansion of hospital infrastructure and the localization of modern technology within them.

Finally, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, delivered a speech during the inauguration program of Newgiza University Hospital. He then proceeded to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the hospital and conducted an inspection tour of a number of its departments.
