NGU hosts “The Seminar on Intellectual Property” in collaboration with The National Council for Women

Newgiza University (NGU), in collaboration with The National Council for Women, held a seminar under the name of “The Seminar on Intellectual Property”, on Tuesday 23 May 2023. The seminar was convened under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Lamis Ragab, NGU Vice President for Life & Health Sciences, and included an incredibly rich series of sessions, given by distinguished guest speakers and key NGU members.

The seminar started with an enlightening session, given by Professor Dr. Nadia Zakhary, a renowned figure from the National Cancer Institute, the former Minister of Scientific Research and the President of the Scientific Research Committee at The National Council for Women, where she shed light on intellectual property, what it means and involves, in addition to explaining the process of patent application.

Dr. Lamis Ragab, NGU Vice President for Life & Health Sciences, held a very interesting session about the “Intellectual Property of Academic Collaborations”. She explained that academic collaboration is something very peculiar at Newgiza University (NGU), and hence, this seminar presented a very good opportunity to highlight the Intellectual Properties of academic collaborations. Dr. Ragab also explained in her presentation the different academic collaborations that NGU has with top globally ranked universities across the world, in addition to what they entail and how they function, emphasizing the vital role of protecting intellectual property in collaborative academic endeavors.

Moreover, Mrs. Dina Ibrahim, a Program Officer at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s Division for Arab Countries Regional & National Development, conducted an engaging online session, where she gave a brief about WIPO and its mission to lead the development of a balanced and effective international IP system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. Afterwards, Prof Dr. Sherif Shaheen, NGU Knowledge Advisor, contributed his expertise on the matter through his presentation “Reading with Respect”, where he discussed NGU Libraries’ copyright policy, which outlines the responsibilities and expectations for both the library staff and users regarding copyright compliance at the NGU Libraries.

Within NGU’s objective of exposing its students to real-life, up-to-date world issues and experiences, Amr Ahmed Said, a Year-2 student from the School of Economics & Politics, provided a fresh and unique outlook on Intellectual Property through his presentation “Intellectual Property; a Student’s Perspective”. Amr talked about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), focusing mainly on Egypt and its National Strategy for IPR 2022, which aims to create an innovation friendly environment, highlighting the Egyptian youth’s role in modern research and new inventions.

“The Seminar on Intellectual Property” was a great success. It brought together a distinguished panel of speakers, who inspired an eagerly passionate set of audience.
